Adult Curriculum

All students in the 6th Form follow the Adult Core Curriculum; this is more relevant in preparation for adult life. We have found that for young adults the National Curriculum no longer suits their needs.

Functional Literacy, Numeracy & ICT is taught in predominately ‘real life’ situations including shopping, cooking, using public transport and emailing. Emphasis is placed on developing independence and confidence in life skills. Westfield is an approved examination centre and functional skills are accredited via WJEC during Years 11 & 14.

Students follow Personal & Social Development courses most suited to supporting their needs and developing individual skills. At Westfield we believe that people are happiest when they are in control of their own lives. We seek to empower our students to be autonomous and self determining. Areas covered include: personal safety, environmental awareness, managing own money and community action. These are accredited via ASDAN Personal and Social Development. Students working towards Entry Level follow a programme of Personal Progress spanning a wide range of achievements from the ability to encounter experiences to the ability to apply basic skills.

Purposeful employment lies at the heart of our Vocational Education. Sixth Form students are involved in weekly work related learning sessions. Work tasters and class based sessions focus on the development of preferred employment options, and the skills required for each. Every Student completes a variety of supported work experience placements with local employers. Placements are matched according to student preferences and skills. Students also access off site work training with local providers enabling their accredited courses to be delivered in real life settings. Examples of available accreditation options are: Hospitality and Catering, Food Hygiene, Customer Service, Cooking and Serving Food. Land Maintenance, Animal Care, Plant Care, Design and Technology. These recognised qualifications are also part of Entry Pathways.

A wide range of Creative Media and Performance Arts units are available. The skills gained can lead to employment or enrich lives by creating social opportunities. These include photography, drama, music, and media. Quality items created are often sold locally with proceeds supporting class projects. Where required specialist teachers deliver sessions. Again these recognised qualifications form part of Entry Pathways.

Sixth Form Residential

Various mini enterprises enable students to raise money to fund their annual residential. Students have full involvement with planning the trip, which provides the ideal opportunity for students to practise and develop their independent living skills, build friendships and encounter new experiences and places. Recent locations have included Cardiff, Isle of Man and Cornwall.

2016 destinations will be Kington, for our local destination, and Liverpool, for the more adventurous.

Extra Curricular Activities

We have extra curricular activities to suit all tastes and skills. Various sports opportunities are provided by our sports specialist; or maybe you prefer singing, dancing or drama; there are numerous performances both in school and the community which students can become involved. We have our own purpose built poly tunnel and sensory garden for our gardening enthusiasts. Other clubs include photography, art, ECO and Youth Club.
